Midtown Hills Precinct detectives Tuesday charged Joshua T. Gaines, 29, with criminal homicide for the shooting death of his aunt, Tivvis Garrison, 47, inside their 3708 Cobble Street home.
Another of the victim’s nephews discovered her body last Saturday afternoon in a bedroom. Family members had become concerned after not hearing from Garrison for several days. Missing from the property were Garrison’s 2009 white Cadillac CTS, her cellphone, and Joshua Gaines.
At 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, DUI Unit Officer Paul Stein saw a Cadillac fail to stop at a red flashing light on Woodland Street. He quickly realized that the tag number matched that of a car wanted in relation to this death investigation. Officer Stein stopped the Cadillac and detained the driver, Joshua Gaines. Discovered in the car were a loaded revolver and the victim’s cellphone. When asked about his aunt, Gaines rambled and would not directly answer detectives’ questions. He was arrested on a charge of gun possession by a convicted felon. He has been in jail since Sunday.
During an autopsy on Monday, the Medical Examiner determined that Garrison died from multiple gunshot wounds to her head. Based on the totality of his investigation, Detective Zachariah Bevis swore out a warrant this evening charging Gaines with Garrison’s murder.
