Specialized Investigations Division (SID) Narcotics Sergeant James Landon Dunaway submitted his resignation effective Thursday from the Metropolitan Police Department after criminal and administrative investigations showed he pocketed more than $5,000 cash in a late Wednesday afternoon sting set up by the police department’s Office of Professional Accountability at a local motel.
Yesterday’s sting culminated a secret Office of Professional Accountability investigation begun in September after one of the officers present during the execution of a drug search warrant at 750 Spence Enclave Way observed Dunaway take some cash and put it in his pocket.
Dunaway was charged last night with felony theft and is free on $2,000 bond.
The criminal investigation of Dunaway continues.
Dunaway, 42, was a 16-year police department employee.
