PHILADELPHIA – Marcus Mariota’s 2019 preseason debut didn’t last long.
The Titans quarterback played just one series in the team’s 27-10 preseason win over the Eagles before being replaced by back-up Ryan Tannehill.
Mariota completed 4-of-8 passes for 24 yards in the game – with all four completions going to receiver Adam Humphries.
“He makes it easy,” Mariota said of Humphries. “He finds soft zones, is a tough matchup for teams. He makes it easy on us.”
The Titans moved the ball 25 yards on 10 plays on their opening drive, but a Mariota pass intended for Humphries fell incomplete on 4th-and-seven, ending the drive in the Philadelphia 23-yard line.
Mariota’s passer rating in preseason game No.1: 56.3.
“I thought we did a fairly good job early on,” Mariota said. “We converted some third downs. We have something to build off of and got a good amount of plays in and I’m looking forward to next week.”
Mariota, who also played just one series in last year’s preseason opener, threw the ball to Humphries on six of his eight attempts. The Titans first drive of the preseason also included a pair of runs by running back Dion Lewis.
Tannehill replaced Mariota at the 7-minute mark of the first quarter. Tannehill completed 12-of-16 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns – a one-yard toss to Pruitt and a 23-yard pass to Firkser – in the game, good for a passer rating of 138.0.
Logan Woodside replaced Tannehill at the end of the second quarter and played the entire second half. Woodside’s 25-yard touchdown pass to receiver Cody Hollister gave the Titans a 21-10 lead in the fourth quarter, and he then connected with Tanner McEvoy for a 17-yard touchdown strike to make it 27-10 with 9:37 left. Woodside finished the night 15-of-20 for 138 yards and the two scores.
The Titans face the New England Patriots in preseason game No.2 next week.
“Our quarterback room is something pretty special,” Mariota said. “We have a good group of guys, Logan and Ryan both have been a tremendous support. I like the atmosphere, and the culture of the quarterback room. We’re going to continue to build off what we have done and push each other.”
